For the past few years we’ve been traveling around the world working on amazing and large scale projects.  Typically we can’t talk about them until they’ve been released to the public.  Two such project just were recently announced. It is exciting for us to see groundbreaking products on the market and to know we had a significant impact on the design and cost of that product.

Surface Laptop: Last week Microsoft released their first ever laptop – the Surface Laptop.

This video does give us chills as the song says.  And we love the fact that it shows a simulation of the machining process! What a beautiful product.  Microsoft is really doing it right with their Surface line of products.

This video gives a deeper look at the development process for the Surface Laptop.

DFM Partners was deeply engaged both with the mechanical design process, sitting for hours with the mechanical engineers designing the machined metal enclosures, as well as involved with optimization of the machining process.  We spent many weeks in China working along side manufacturing engineers, CNC programmers, quality engineers, and project managers optimizing not only the speed of the machining process but also the quality yields.  It is very fun and rewarding work and the best part is saving millions of dollars in manufacturing costs.

Surface Pro 4: DFM Partners engineers were also very closely involved with DFM and process consulting for the Surface Pro 4, for both the back case, and the kickstand. Spending many days and weeks with Microsoft engineers as well as Chinese suppliers.

So go get yourself a Surface device and geek out on how cool the manufacturing process is that went into making it.
